The site is 7 hectares of woodlands, grasslands and wilderness at 410m altitude, sitting at the foot of Donačka Gora and the cliffs of Resenik. It is designated as a Natura 2000 SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest).

We don't flush fresh water — instead we create valuable humanure compost for our fruit trees. Beautifully crafted by 2021 volunteers.

A family of 4 saves over 50,000 litres of water per year by composting instead of flushing. Used to fertilise our fruit trees.

Where we and our volunteers cook, eat and take shelter. Built using chestnut timber from our old roof.

The Land

7 hectares at 410m altitude at the foot of Donačka Gora. Natura 2000 SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). In June 2019, volunteer ecologist Manon Simonneau surveyed birds, amphibians, reptiles and butterflies.

About half our 7 hectares are woodlands. Mixed deciduous woodland with lots of chestnut and wild fruit trees, plus areas of single species woodland of Hazel and Oak.

Life to Grasslands

Grassland Meadows

Part of the EU funded Life to Grasslands project since 2018. Our non-woodland hectares are managed as dry grasslands for biodiversity conservation.

Orchard planting

50+ fruit trees including old varieties, planted with Life to Grasslands in 2019. Widely spaced (~10m) to grow old with standing deadwood habitat.

Climate zone 7b. No-dig beds, polytunnels, forest garden, coldframes, seed saving and a garden sensor network.

Where we collect self-seeded volunteer trees that pop up around the garden for replanting.
